Home Waters Fly Fishing offers private instruction for both single-hand and spey casting. Whether you are new to fly fishing, need to brush-up on your skills because it’s been awhile, wish to fine tune your skills, troubleshoot a particular challenge, or want to take up spey casting, our awesome instructor David Flaherty has your lesson options covered.

Introduction to Fly Casting I: The Basics

Description: This introductory level lesson is designed for those new to fly fishing. However, it is also a great place to start if someone hasn’t fly fished in awhile and would like a refresher on casting. This lesson includes both water and lawn casting.

Skill Level: Beginner/Brush-up

Cost: $100

Length of lesson: 3 hours

Materials covered:

  • Pick up and lay down of fly line
  • Parallel loop tracking exercise
  • False casting 3 times consistently without hitting the ground/water
  • Roll casting
  • Final cast in the backcast
  • Reach mend
  • Thorough analysis of improper techniques to self diagnose when practicing alone in the future

Introduction to Fly Casting II: The Basics Plus

Description: This 4-part lesson series includes materials covered in the intro to fly casting class. It also includes instruction of various casting styles, focusing on the situational “hows” and “whens” to use them.

Skill Level: Beginner/Brush-up

Cost: $275

Length of lesson: One 3-hour lesson and three 2-hour lessons, for a total of 9 hours.

Materials covered:

  • Overhead casting
  • Side casting to get under trees
  • False casting without “ticking” the water
  • Target practicing for accuracy (casting into rings)
  • Roll casting
  • Casting double and heavy rigs (nymph rod/streamers)
  • Double hauling
  • Casting in heavy wind
  • Cross body casting

Single-hand Continuing Casting Lessons 

Description: Clients that have taken either of the intro classes are eligible for additional lessons. These lessons are designed to teach advanced casting techniques, troubleshoot a particular challenge or fine tune those fly casting skills with a knowledgeable instructor. 

Length of lesson: 1 or 2 hours.

Cost: 1 hr = $50. 2 hr = $80

* Two-hand Spey Casting Lessons *

Introduction to Spey Casting I: The Basics

Description: The introductory level lesson is geared towards Skagit casting (sustained anchor cast) and how to rig-up the rod.

Skill Level: Beginner/Brush-up

Cost: $125

Length of lesson: 3 hours

Materials covered:

  • Anchor placement
  • Roll cast to clear the line
  • Switch cast
  • Snap T/Snap C
  • Double Spey
  • Same intro can be applied towards Scandinavian lines (touch and go) if preferred or advancing from sustained anchored casting
  • Roll cast
  • Single spey
  • Snake roll

Introduction to Spey Casting II: The Basics Plus

Description: This 4-part lesson series includes materials covered in the intro to Spey casting class. It also includes instruction of advanced casting techniques including proper anchor placement in relation to wind direction, and casting river left and river right.

Skill Level: Beginner/Brush-up

Cost: $350

Length of lesson: One 3-hour lesson and three 2-hour lessons, for a total of 9 hours.

Materials covered:

  • Roll cast
  • Snap T/Double Spey (sustained anchor) Skagit
  • Single Spey (touch and go) Scandi
  • Perry poke
  • Mending
  • Line management
  • Anchor placement
  • Rod placement during the swing
  • Reading the water in the sections of the run

Two-hand Continuing Spey Casting Lessons

Description: Clients that have taken either of the intro to Spey casting classes are eligible for additional lessons. These lessons are designed to work on specific two-hand casting techniques.

Length of lesson: 1 or 2 hours.

Cost: 1 hr = $50. 2 hrs = $100
